Mattarella Calls for Italian Military Modernization Amid Emerging Security Threats

(MENAFN) Mattarella Calls For Italian Military Italian President Sergio Mattarella urged a comprehensive modernization of the country's armed forces on Wednesday, warning that growing cyber risks, disinformation campaigns and the expanding role of artificial intelligence in warfare require changes to military capabilities.

In a message addressed to Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, Mattarella noted that conventional armed conflicts remained a major concern across several regions, including Europe.

He said the nature of these conflicts was changing as they increasingly coincided with information manipulation, cyber operations and the deployment of advanced technologies in military activities.

The president specifically highlighted the growing use of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems, describing their involvement in hostile operations as a source of concern for national and international security.

Mattarella stressed that Italy's military institutions must respond to these developments by updating their structures, adopting emerging technologies and strengthening their ability to deal with future threats.

"This scenario requires a profound capacity for renewal, to rapidly integrate new technologies and ensure concrete capabilities for future challenges," Mattarella said.

His remarks underscored the need for Italy to prepare its armed forces for a security environment in which traditional military confrontations increasingly overlap with digital threats and technology-driven forms of warfare.Modernization Amid Emerging Security Threats
