Public Works invites bids for river defence, landing infrastructure

The government is advancing efforts to strengthen river defences and improve transportation infrastructure in hinterland communities, with the Ministry of Public Works inviting bids for several projects along the Berbice, Mazaruni and Demerara rivers.

The proposed works include the construction of rip-rap river defence structures at Almanack Landing, Arian Island, and Batavia Landing along the Mazaruni River in Region Seven, as well as river-defence improvements at Malali on the Demerara River in Region Ten.

Along the Berbice River, the ministry is seeking contractors for timber revetment river defence structures and landings at DeVeldt, Sandhill and Kimbia; Ebini, Wiruni and Maria Henrietta; and Kumaka, Calcuni and Hururu.

These infrastructure projects are expected to strengthen riverbanks against erosion while improving landing facilities used by residents, farmers and businesses to transport people, goods and agricultural produce.

It will support greater connectivity for riverine communities, facilitate access to essential services and strengthen economic activities by improving the movement of goods and people.

The projects form part of the government’s continued efforts to improve infrastructure in hinterland and riverine communities, while supporting community development and protecting livelihoods and public assets.

The invitation for bids is being conducted through the National Competitive Bidding procedure under the Procurement Act 2003. Interested contractors can purchase bidding documents for G$5,000 from the Ministry of Public Works, beginning November 3, 2026.

Bids will be opened on November 20, 2026, at 09:00 hours.
