Military Escalation Reported Between US, Iran in Gulf Region
According to statements released by Iranian and American military authorities, the confrontation began after a US strike targeted a tanker near the Strait of Hormuz late Tuesday. Washington alleged that the vessel, identified as the Botswana-flagged M/T Lexie, was traveling toward Kharg Island in violation of sanctions and restrictions imposed by the United States. Reports said the strike damaged the vessel's engine compartment.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) subsequently announced retaliatory action, claiming it had launched naval missiles at what it described as a US-affiliated vessel named Panaya.
The situation escalated further when US forces reportedly struck an Iranian military communications facility on Qeshm Island. American military officials later characterized the operation as a defensive response, describing the target as an Iranian military command-and-control site.
Iran then launched additional retaliatory attacks, according to statements from the IRGC. The group claimed it targeted a US air and helicopter base located in a neighboring Gulf country as well as facilities associated with the US Navy's Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain.
US military officials said their forces successfully intercepted multiple Iranian ballistic missiles and drones during the confrontation. The Pentagon also stated that no American facilities were hit.
According to US accounts of the incident, two missiles launched toward Kuwait failed to reach their intended destination, while three missiles fired toward Bahrain were intercepted by American and Bahraini air-defense systems before impact.
The reported exchange marks another sharp escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran in the strategically important Gulf region, where military activity and maritime security concerns have intensified in recent months.
Independent verification of the claims made by either side was not immediately available, and authorities had not released detailed information regarding casualties or the full extent of the damage resulting from the reported strikes.
